There was in the NYT a few weeks ago an excellent series of articles
describing military strategy. One article was on the Navy and its carrier
requirement and deployments.
At any one time, there are five or six carriers in port for maintenance.
Two are deployed in Indian Ocean/Persian sea, two in Mediteranean, one
in the Atlantic, one is based in Japan (Midway) and one in the Pacific.
Two are required for the indian ocean and mediteranean because of the
six-month rule.
