[net.auto] Decent muscle car for under $20K?

kiessig@idi.UUCP (Rick Kiessig) (04/14/84)

There have got to be some decent muscle cars for under $20K
that will do 0 to 60 in 6 seconds or better. Anyone care to
enlighten me on what's available now days? I'd rather not have
to deal with something from the 60's, but I have a feeling that's
about all there is.

If you want to just run down to your dealer and drop $20K for
0-60 in under 6, I think you'll have a problem. I don't know
of anything with that kind of acceleration in that price range.
So, assuming you still want to go around corners (drag racers
have *real* good 0-60 times), the only way to get this is to
buy something and "fix" it. A base model RX-7 for example (about
$10K) plus 10K worth of parts from Racing Beat, and you'll
have 0-60 in under 6 seconds. No sweat. The Formula-One people
pull 600 horses from a 1.5 liter engine (yes, that's right, 1500
cc). The engines don't last a long time, but the cars will do
0-60 in 1.7 seconds, and they stick pretty good in the corners too.

I'd love to do this if I didn't have to drive it to work...

I hadn't thought about "fixing" a car. Interesting idea.
Maybe there's something fairly straight forward I can do to my
1984 Vette (with the standard 5.7L V-8) to shave another second
or two off of its 7.1s 0-60. Any ideas? Vendors? Addresses?

How to shave time off 0-60 in an '84 Vette: Trade it in on a '67,
preferably with a 427......
