OH NOOO!! I'm dogmeat!! I screwed up (first time this month :-)!!) auto fans!! I received a nice bit of mail from Rick Bensene in Portland Ore. in which he chatted about some nice Chev's he owns (boy, am I envious!), and he asked me about my information on the aluminum ZL-1 Camaros. I stated that it had been some time since I had ran across the info but that I would try and re-locate the source. Well.......... I was WRONG! I most humbly appologize for my error. I contacted Bill Hazelet Chevrolet in Kent WA. (which by the way for all of you UofWA, Boeing and John Fluke people, is by far the best Pacific N.W. Chevrolet franchise I have ever had the pleasure to do business with - great people and fantastic parts person- nel who will really work for you in finding parts), and then a friend of mine who has a ZL-1 source book. There were no aluminum front end pieces on the ZL-1 Camaros. They were all sheet metal. The only aluminum front end Chev's were the '63 Z-11 Impalas (about 50 to 55 made) and ten or so '62 Impalas (Belairs?). Chrysler also made some aluminum Hemi cars in '63 or '64 for the explicit purpose of competing against the Chev's. Ultra-rare today but I did see one last fall at a swap meet at the Western Wash. Fair grounds. It was a '64 factor Hemi Belvedere with the aluminum front end. It was for sale for about $6000. Not a bad deal for such a factory bullet! Anyway, I'm evading my guilt! No aluminum Camaros. I've asked my friend to lay some of his source book information on me and will submit some of it to the net - he'll have to find it first - seems his wife cleaned out his closet last week and he can't find a thing. One thing he remembers in the way of weight savings done by the factory was the fact that there was no sound in- sulation on the car. And since floor consoles weighed more than column shifters, the models with the Turbo 400's had (guess what), column shifters. I just wish I had known that he had this information before I let my fingers do the talking! Will you ever believe me again?!?! Sorry folks.
