There was an instance, during a Day of Independence celebrations in Israel,
of a paratrooper jumping out of a C-47 and getting his parachute caught on
the tailwheel. He was one of the most experienced paratroopers in Israel at
the time, a senior instructor in the para. school.

The plane was flown, with the paratrooper still trailing from its
tailwheel, (plainly seen from the astonished viewers on the ground)
towards the sea. During the flight, three of the strings (or whatever those
things connecting the parachute to the man are called) snapped. When the
plane reached the sea, the last string was cut and the man dived into the sea

from some 20 meters height.

newer aircraft have systems onboard for the retrieval of 'towed jumpers'.
the ideal (ha-ha) situation...
jumper gets snagged, puts hands on head to indicate all okay, cut away.

not-so-ideal situation...
jumper is injured/unconscious/scared shitless, electrical pulley hauls
him back in. the problem with this is he will get beat up against the
side of the aircraft until the jump-master gets him in the door.

any way you look at it, it's not fun!
