[net.auto] truckers and punishments

      --> 6 MONTHS IN JAIL AND A $ 1000.00 FINE <--

This is the punishment given the asshole who plowed his rig into the
Conn. Turnpike toll plaza last year. This is a very light sentence for
a man who was driving on a suspended license because it had been lifted
19 times before. It seems that every time a truck is involved in an
accident the driver and the owner get off VERY lightly. Personally I am
sick and tired of this public-be-damned attitude. If a driver takes a rig
out that has bald tires, bad brakes, cracked fifth wheels, and other
serious defects and is involved in an accident that takes life, then that
driver and the owners of the vehicle should be brought up on charges that
warrant a little more than a 6 month jail sentence and a 1K fine.
Remember this little fact. A loaded tractor trailer weighs as much as
a loaded 727 jetliner. Next time a trucker climbs your tail at 75 MPH and
causes you to almost lose control of your car, you can take pride at the
severe punishment that driver would face if he errs and plows into you. Oh
I keep forgetting that driving safely with maintained vehicles cuts into
the profits of those concerned.

While I agree with the sentiment, I must dispute the "little fact".
A loaded 727 weighs in the neighborhood of 180,000 lbs, or about two
grossly overloaded rigs.

I find it hard to believe that a rig weighs more than a
Boeing 727. I'm not a truck lover or anything like that,
just a skeptic (sp?) and a rotten speller.

... or even as much as a 727.
