RKIENER@vax1.trincoll.edu (Ron Kiener) (08/14/90)
From: Ron Kiener <RKIENER@vax1.trincoll.edu> (I hope I have sent this to the right place) I am absolutely new to military.sci, via a BITNET location. But I must say that just from today's (Aug 12, 1990) DIGEST I have found what I am looking for! So here is my question (which probably has already been answered in an earlier volume): I am looking for quality articles or books on USCENTCOM. After a quick looksie through our library (aside from Senate Hearings) I have found one good article dated 1987 by Maxwell O. Johnson in _US Strategic Interests in the Gulf_ entitled "Rapid Deployment and the Regional Military Challenge: The Persian Gulf Equation." Can anyone of the obviously well-informed members of military.sci help me find more recent or more detailed writings on USCENTCOM, MAC, CRAF, and in particular: It seems that most USCENTCOM strategic planning was focused on a Soviet overland attack. Does anyone have reference to strategic planning for an interstate rivalry scenario such as the one we are watching unfold? Obviously, a threat to the Saudi regime was identified as a likely reason for launching USCENTCOM, but can anyone lead me to writings which deal with this scenario? Or is everything directed at a Soviet land attack on the assumption that if the planners can think through that tough scenario, all the other scenarios would simply be "easier" versions of the MAIN EVENT. If these questions are judged too basic or simplistic by the readers of military-Digest, I promise to just sit back and enjoy the show. Thanks in advance. +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ |Ron Kiener |BITNET:RKIENER@TRINCC | |Department of Religion | | |Trinity College |Working on a message | |Hartford, CT 06106 | | +----------------------------------------------------------------------+
