As most of you know ,a large international naval task force is being assembled in the Persian gulf and surrounding areas. These are the ships that I know to be involved so far:-

USS INDEPENDENCE (aircraft carrier) - on station with battlegroup in the
                       Arabian sea.
USS ANTIETAM (cruiser) - in Persian gulf with 9 other ships.

USS EISENHOWER (aircraft carrier) - on station with battlegroup in the
                       Red sea.
USS TICONDEROGA (cruiser) - Red sea.

USS SARATOGA (aircraft carrier) - sailed for Middle East from Florida.

USS WISCONSIN (battleship) - sailed for Middle East from Florida.

USS INCHON (assault ship) - bound for the Mediterranean.

HMAS ADELAIDE (frigate), HMAS DARWIN (frigate),
HMAS SUCCESS (fleet support) - Australian contingent leaving for the gulf
                       on Monday August 13.

HMS YORK (destroyer), HMS ORANGELEAF (supply), plus two frigates -
                       British contingent.

There are also a number of Soviet and French ships involved including
the French aircraft carrier CLEMENCEAU and a helicopter carrying cruiser.

If anyone can supplement this list with additional names , please post them on the net for the benefit of all those interested in the gulf crisis.

Canadian Forces Task Force, due to leave from Halifax NS this week,
as reported on CBC Radio's repeated on US NPR & Walden World News
Service (only commercial, AM, folk music station in US), in
interview with CF Admiral commanding CF Maritime Forces (Vancouver):

2xDD: Athabascan (sp?) of Iraqois class, and Protector
1 Supply ship -- Terra Nova
Under command of a Commodore.
(I may have the names Protector & Terra Nova reversed. Apologies in
advance for any errors in my notes taken whilst driving listening to
the radio.)

Main armament is 2+3 Sea-King helicopters and anti-shipping
missiles, (supposedly also effective against Exocets, if I belived my
notes!). The supply ship has "ship to ship gunnery capability"
which I believe means it has a multi-purpose turret.

These ships are coming off an excelerated re-fit. They now have
Vulcan Phalanx close-in weapons systems, upgrdade E-W "including decoy".
They figure to steam 7k miles
via Suez at cruising speed in 3 weeks; if things heat up, they'll
switch to full-steam. If they have to take it around the horn (if
Egypt denies passage), it would be 11k miles.
