[sci.military] Canadian 280 Class refit woes

pt@dciem (Paul Tomblin) (08/28/90)

From: cognos!geovision!pt@dciem (Paul Tomblin)

A FOAF (Friend of a Friend) in the Canadian Navy (such as it is) told me
that one of our 280's (Destroyer Escorts) was in the drydock for a major
refit (weapons system upgrade, etc) when it fell over. It's
supposedly got a broken back, and will have to be written off.

The DND (Department of National Defence) is keeping quiet about
it, until they decide whether to scrap it or fix it. (Can you
just weld the hull back together?)

Anybody out there know any more details? Does this sort of thing
happen much? Is my FOAF telling the truth?
(Does this belong in alt.folklore.military?)
