[sci.military] NBC Recon vehicle

I recall several years ago that the Army was developing a NBC recon vehicle
based on the M113. The concept was that since some were getting replaced by
Bradleys and we'd have a few left over it'd be nice to actually build the NBC
vehicle instead of just leaving it on permanent back burner.

After a while I heard that the M113 idea got canned in favor of buying German
vehicles (nice ones as I remember) in some sort of trade for buying some US
gear (trucks or something from some senators hometown). Then whoever makes the
LAV got into the act and it went for competative bid.

Has any been produced or even a contract awarded? It would be real nice to
have a few around these days.

YES! The contract has been awarded, and to the Germans. TRW bid on the
NBCR-S and lost out to the German plan. I will only say that our design
cost less, does much, and is ready for deploment (we have offered to send
at least 6 now, the Germans can only send one now and more in six[6] months).
I must stop now, this is a sore subject (too many friends laid-off) and I
might say something I know too little about the facts (emotion takes over)
and get myself into some really deep yogurt!
