Electronics:
Jay Bird J-band radar capable of illuminating targets for
attack by Advanced Atoll passive radar homers.
Odd Rods IFF in lower nose and tail.
Sirena 3 rear warning radar receiver.
Air to ground data link.
Analog autopilot.
Optical gunsight linked to radar.
Only limited heads-up display capability.
Some Western-built ECM pods (such as the Italian Selenia
ALQ-234) may be carried.
Remarks:
Good low-speed stability.
High performance and agility.
Limited internal fuel capacity.
Short range and limited endurance is a weakness.
Lacks a really-effective weapons system.
Jay Bird has only limited look down or navigational capability.
Useful for aerial target illumination, but not for ground
attack.
Iraqi MiG-21s may be able to carry the Matra 550 Magic infrared
homing missile.
Iraq has over 100 MiG-21s in service. MF is most advanced
version.
Earlier PF version with less powerful engine and less-advanced
electronics also in service.
