From: jfb@ihlpm.att.com (Joseph F Baugher) Here's the second entry, the MiG-21 Fishbed: Mikoyan MiG-21MF Fishbed J: Powerplant: One Tumansky R-13-300 turbojet, 14,500 lb. st. with AB Performance: Maximum Speed: Mach 2.1 (1385 mph) at 36,000 feet (clean) Maximum Speed: Mach 1.05 (800 mph) at sea level. Initial climb rate: 30,000 feet/min. Maximum service ceiling: 59,000 feet Effective service ceiling: 50,000 feet. Range: 680 miles (internal fuel only) Weights: Empty Weight: 12,300 lb. Maximum loaded weight: 21,600 lb. Armament: 23-mm twin-barreled GSh-23 cannon in internal pod mounted under the fuselage. One underfuselage pylon for carrying drop tank. Four underwing weapons pylons. Two AA-2-2 Advanced Atoll radar guided AAMs and two AA-8 Aphid infrared homing AAMs. 4000 lbs. of bombs on underwing points for short-range attack missions. Electronics: Jay Bird J-band radar capable of illuminating targets for attack by Advanced Atoll passive radar homers. Odd Rods IFF in lower nose and tail. Sirena 3 rear warning radar receiver. Air to ground data link. Analog autopilot. Optical gunsight linked to radar. Only limited heads-up display capability. Some Western-built ECM pods (such as the Italian Selenia ALQ-234) may be carried. Remarks: Good low-speed stability. High performance and agility. Limited internal fuel capacity. Short range and limited endurance is a weakness. Lacks a really-effective weapons system. Jay Bird has only limited look down or navigational capability. Useful for aerial target illumination, but not for ground attack. Iraqi MiG-21s may be able to carry the Matra 550 Magic infrared homing missile. Iraq has over 100 MiG-21s in service. MF is most advanced version. Earlier PF version with less powerful engine and less-advanced electronics also in service.
