Mention has been made of the Soviet Udaloy-class guided missile destroyer
which has been deployed to the Persian Gulf area. Here is a brief description
of this ship:
UDALOY-class guided missile destroyer:
displacement: 6200-6700 tons (standard)
8200 tons (full load)
length: 492 feet.
beam: 63 ft 4 in.
draft: 20 ft. 3 in.
engines: 4 gas turbines (120,000 shaft hp). Two shafts.
Max. speed: 34 knots
range: 2000 nautical miles at 33 knots.
5000 nautical miles at 20 knots.
Crew: 300
helicopters: two Kamov Ka-27 Helix A
Armament:
Two 100 mm guns, one in each of two forward turrets.
Four 30-mm rotary cannon, one in each of four turrets
surrounding the aft pair of gas-turbine exhausts.
8 vertical launchers for SA-N-9 surface-to-air missiles.
There are 8 missiles per launcher. The SA-N-9 has a
range of about 8 nautical miles and can engage aircraft
at altitudes of up to 40,000-60,000 feet. It is reportedly
capable of engaging antiship cruise missiles.
8 SS-N-14 Silex rocket-boosted homing torpedoes in a pair of
angled quad launchers abrest of the bridge. Entry into the
water by the torpedo is slowed by a parachute.
Two RBU-6000 rocket launchers on stern just ahead of
helicopter hanger. Each launcher has twelve barrels. These
can fire high-explosive charges with either depth or
influence fusing. The weapon is related to the "hedgehog"
of World War 2.
8 21-inch torpedo tubes (two quad, one on each side of the
ship just aft of the second pair of gas turbine exhausts.
Rails are fitted for the deployment of mines.
Electronics:
2 Bass Tilt fire control radars
2 Cross Sword fire control radars
2 Eye Bowl fire control radars
1 Kite Screech fire control radar
3 Palm Frond navigation radars
1 Strut Pair surface search radar
1 Top Plate/Top Mesh air search radar
Bow mounted and variable depth sonars are provided
Bell Shroud and Bell Squat electronic warfare systems are
provided.
The Udaloy-class guided missile destroyer is a large and capable ship. It is
intended primarily for antisubmarine warfare, but it does have a formidable
antiaircraft and antiship capability. It is similar in overall concept to
the US Navy Spruance class.
