Just what is

		. Chobham armor?

		. Reactive armor?

		. Applique armor?

These terms crop up from time to time in sci.military, and I'm not sure what
they mean. Is there anyone who can provide some clarification?

[mod.note: In brief:

Chobham armor is a joint British/US development. It's structure
is secret, but it is assumed to be of composite, perhaps layered,
construction, with alternating components of armor steel, ceramic,
and possibly depleted uranium. It is claimed to be more resistant
to HEAT warheads than any other armor.

Reactive armor is a series of explosive-filled boxes mounted over
the tank's regular armor. It is supposed to explode when contacted
by HEAT projectiles, with the effect of disrupting the formation
of the shaped charge and reducing the penetration of the jet.
Reactive armor is in use by the USSR and Israel.

Applique armor is a generic term for additional armor plate welded
overtop of the tank's normal armor. This was commonly done on
some models of M4 Shermans in WWII, for one example, to protect
vulnerable areas such as ammunition racks.
