Bad weather precludes massed night bombing of London, but a few raiders
bomb the capital vicinity.   This is London's first bomb-free night since
early September.

The Italian submarine Trichech mistakenly torpedoes and sinks her sister ship,
the Gemma.

General Antonescu of Rumania takes command of the Iron Guard, cementing
his position as dictator of that nation.  

The Japanese newspaper Hochi warns that war will result if Britain
re-opens the Burma Road for arms traffic.  The road is scheduled to
be opened again on 18 October.
