From: wolit@mhuxd.att.com (Jan I Wolitzky) Do any members of the Arab League, which own the Arabsat communication satellite launched by the orbiter Discovery in 1985, use the satellite for military purposes, including tactical communication? I know that the satellite includes provisions for preventing eavesdropping by member countries on the communications of others, but are there any provisions for denying service to some members altogether? I.e., once the U.S. and the Gulf Cooperation Council decide to invade Iraq, do they have the capability to shut down the transponders used by Iraq? Does Iraq have the ability to exercise control over any part of the satellite autonomously? -- Jan Wolitzky, AT&T Bell Labs, Murray Hill, NJ; 908 582-2998 att!mhuxd!wolit or jan.wolitzky@att.com (Affiliation given for identification purposes only)
