Since I have this habit of speaking my mind, I'm used to getting a fair amount of network "hate" mail (anybody who speaks their mind on this network will get such mail--it comes with the territory), and no doubt this message will result in my being able to add some new bytes to the collection. But I can't pass this up. I cannot help but sit here laughing to read the previous posting by "chuqui", who recently seems to have started acting as if he's spent the last five years keeping Usenet going, and as if we'd all be in simply terrible shape without him. As far as I'm concerned, chuqui sorta crawled out of the woodwork and has the curious habit of saying whatever he thinks will get him the most praise at any given moment. He doesn't seem to care how contradictory or nonsensicle some of his actions or statements might be--he seems to simply say whatever he thinks people want to hear. The recent case where he tried to put down Peter Honeyman is a good example. First he talks as if Gary Pearlman was the ultimate network resource, and discusses Peter as if he were some sort of horrid disease to be eradicated for the sake of humanity. When it became apparent that most of the network respects Peter highly, chuqui suddenly did a flip-flop with a syrupy apology clearly designed to regain the network's collective favor. If this were an isolated case, it could be easily ignored, but chuqui's recent posting, where he warns about the problems that could be caused by "turning in" a person (who writes "disruptive" mail) to his or her system administrator is quite incredible. It's incredible in light of the fact that chuqui himself was responsible for one of the most flagrant cases of turning in a mail author to a system admin, in a manner that could have caused that person a great deal of professional and personal problems. Up to now, I've resisted the urge to comment about the various spates of messages that I've seen recently that relate, one way or another, to comments that chuqui has made. Everyone is certainly welcome to their opinions, but it's really starting to irk me to see how this one particular person seems to be making a career of stirring up controversy, then suddenly flipping around to the other side and even seeming to argue against his own recent actions and messages. I would much perfer to avoid writing messages like this one. But it's important that chuqui, and others who are hell-bent on becoming network "personalities" (whatever the hell that means) realize that not all damage done via the net can be reversed by sudden opinion flip-flops or apologies which seem designed to try regain popular sentiment at all costs. It makes a lot more sense to think carefully before sending messages (to the network or to system administrators) rather than to be in the position of having to apologize later for the damage done through those original messages. --Lauren-- "So you want to be a network star?"
