i believe the Japanese E2C is the Hawkeye - the same
as operated by the United States Navy (and Isreal,
Egypt, Saudi Arabia(?), and others).

use and mission are consistent with its large radar and
high rate data links: command, control, AEW.  it can be operated
from large deck carriers, though only the United States
does this.  everyone else runs them from land.

Sidelight: what is the status of the carriers that Japan
had considered building?  in case i misremembered it, they
are of the same class as the British ASW carriers operating
both ASW helos and indigenous V/STOL aircraft.  this is
consistent with the role of "Maritime Self-Defense."
