From: military@att.att.com (Bill Thacker) Tuesday, 19 November, 1940 The Luftwaffe subjects Birmingham to a heavy night raid, composed of about 350 aircraft. Only a few of the attackers are lost, and the damage to Birmingham is severe. Switzerland outlaws the pro-Nazi Swiss National Movement. Serrano Sun~er, Spanish Foreign Minister, informs Hitler and Ribbentrop that Spain will require 400,000 tons of grain and a two-month period for preparation in order to attack Gibraltar, even assuming help from German units. In fact, Franco has already decided to maintain Spain's neutrality. A broadcast from the Vatican City denies the claims of the Spanish newspaper Alcazar that Nazism is compatible with Christian ideals. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Bill Thacker military@att.att.com Send submissions for "50 Years Ago" to military-request@att.att.com "Nazi literature has attacked Christianity and the Catholic Church as a whole, as well as its personnel and its institution, and has even attacked the most essential dogmas of the church. This attack has been carried out with the greatest possible efficiency." - Vatican City Radio
