From: <ames!ames!claris!portal!cup.portal.com!Eric_S_Klien@uunet.UU.NET> What percentage of the A-10s have been shipped to SA? Don't the reserves have quite a few of these planes? What other forces can replace our defective anti-tank helicopters? Is all of the following true? 1) Defective M1 tanks are being replaced with M1A1 tanks. (M1 has no chemical protection.) 2) Defective M16 rifles are being replaced with M14 rifles. (M16s jam in the desert.) 3) Accurate maps are finally being distributed to troops. 4) Satelite dish hookups are finally being distributed to troops so they can figure out which sand dune they are on. 5) 90% of our heavy armor is being shipped to SA. Finally, would it make a lot of sense to ignore the 650,000 Iraqi troops in Kuwait and send everything against Baghdad figuring that the troops in Kuwait would surrender if the Iraqi government was overthrown? (Saddam just ordered another quarter of a million troops to Kuwait in case you haven't heard.) Eric Klien

From: gregs@meaddata.com (Greg Smith) I have heard that a lot of equipment now in SA will have to be left there because of "sand-induced-wear-and-tear-damage". Does anyone know if this is true? I find it hard to believe that the US would commit such a large percentage of it's tanks to a venture knowing that they would never get them back even if the war was not fought. This is real third+ hand knowledge. I'd appreciate opinions of anyone out there that is in the know about modern tanks and their care and feeding. Greg
