[net.auto] FWD on Citations

dimeo@smurf.DEC (05/02/84)

In the late sixties and early seventies I was the typical
motor-head. Took apart anything that burned gasoline(or anything
flamable, for that matter) and then put it together again and ran
it until it blew up! Great days!

Well, all good things come to an end and I am now a decent
member of society and only have a 69' Vette in the garage that I
terrorize the neighborhood with on rare occasions. The rest of my
fleet is comprised of two Citations.

One is an 80' X11 with the dreaded rear brakes! I found
that one of the brakes was improperly installed at the factory,
causing one of the sides to grab before the other. Once fixed, they
became acceptable although by far the worst I've seen come out of
Chevrolet in the 17 years I've owned Chevies.

The other Citation is an 82' X11 and a great little car!
If it only had Tubo and a decent first and second gear I'd
probably revert to my wild days! It can corner with some of the best
and will stay with a SAAB turbo. I know! I work with another wild
man and we've tried to loose one another a number of times.

Now my question. These Citations use ATF for the standard
transmission fluid!??! How-cum? I check it every 5000 miles but I
wonder at what point that thin fluid will break down and I'll shatter
a gear during a power shift? ( yes, you can do that with this car.
Get rubber in the first two gears too!)
Anyone out there with experience with FWD trannies?

I don't know anything about FWDs, but I know of at least one other
manual transmission that wants ATF-- my very own '66 Dodge 4-speed. I
found the recommendation so strange that I called my local Chrysler
dealer, whose mechanic told me you can run it on either ATF or gear
oil; use ATF if it shifts hard, use oil if it's noisy, or mix the two!
