From: military@att.att.com (Bill Thacker) Monday, 9 December, 1940 The war in North Africa is renewed as General Wavell launches Operation Compass. The British 7th Armored and 4th Indian divisions, together with the 7th Royal Tank Regiment, attack the 10 divisions of the Italian 10th army dug in around Sidi Barrani. The British troops, led by General O'Connor, achieve complete surprise despite a 3-day march from Mersa Matruh. The Italian troops are deployed in a number of fortified camps, too far separated to provide mutual support. O'Connor attacks them one at a time, overrun Nibeiwa, then Tummar West. 7th RTR's Matilda tanks are virtually impervious to the defending guns, and British casualties are light, and many prisoners are taken at each camp. Meanwhile, Italy continues to shuffle her high command. Admiral Riccardi becomes Undersecretary of State, and Admiral Iachino is appointed to take over Admiral Campioni's fleet command. In Hadersleben, Denmark, a Danish Nazi Party parade is broken up by anti-Nazi demonstrators. In the ensuing riot, police arrest several Nazi leaders. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Bill Thacker military@att.att.com Send submissions for "50 Years Ago" to military-request@att.att.com "Following Italy's debacle in Albania at the hands of the Greeks, it is evident that the moment has been well chosen to make Marshal Graziani fight." - unidentified British military observer
