From: military@att.att.com (Bill Thacker) Sunday, 15 December, 1940 In Albania, Greek troops threaten Tepeleni with encirclement and closer on Valona. Scattered rain and snow, which have restricted combat over the past several days, has let up. As a gesture toward improved Franco-German relations, the coffin containing the remains of Napoleon II, which had been entombed in Vienna since his death in 1832, is returned to France for burial in Les Invalides. Vichy "leaks" information to Switzerland indicating that Marshal Petain has refused a German request to allow passage of troops through France for deployment to North Africa and Albania via Italian transports. Another rumor claims that Vice Premier Laval was arrested after a plot was uncovered in which he planned a coup to establish himself as dictator. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Bill Thacker military@att.att.com Send submissions for "50 Years Ago" to military-request@att.att.com "Aside from defense expenditures, the budget can be balanced on our present income, but we all object to the higher taxes.
