From: military@att.att.com (Bill Thacker) Wednesday, 25 December, 1940 The German heavy cruiser Admiral Hipper attacks a British troop convoy 700 miles west of Cape Finisterre. Outmatched by the convoy escort, she is forced to withdraw after damaging two transports and the cruiser HMS Berwick. The Hipper also begin experiencing difficulties with its high-pressure steam system, and retires to Brest for repairs. Christmas Day sees further silence over Britain and Germany, but fighting continues in Albania and North Africa. Additional German troops are reported moving into Rumania, and entering Bulgaria. Some sources see this as an indication of tensions between Germany and the USSR, while others claim it portends a German invasion of Greece. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Bill Thacker military@att.att.com Send submissions for "50 Years Ago" to military-request@att.att.com "The future will be hard, but our feet are planted on the path of victory, and with the help of God we shall make our way to justice and to peace." - King George VI, in his Christmas Day broadcast
