[net.auto] Teflon oil additives

dhd@hou5d.UUCP (05/07/84)

This is in response to a recent posting about Teflon additives for motor
oils and their worth.

The article inferred that Teflon oil additives were worthless and that dealers
of such items, knowing about the worthlessness, are of questionable ethics;
the basis of the remarks (according to the author) is an article from
"THE AVIATION CONSUMER" which mentions Petrolon's Slick-50,
among other additives.

I think some additional information is needed here.

I have successfully used Slick-50 and, having checked out the product,
have in my possession a copy of:

	1) an article from CONSUMERS DIGEST (March/April 1982) which is
	   very favorable for SLICK-50.

	2) a copy of a letter from the Marketing Manager of the Fluoropolymers
Division of DuPont, stating that the Petrolon formula falls
outside the press release of February 1, 1980.

I think it is interesting that the author of the net.auto article (Vern Metzger)
referred to the U. of Utah statement that there was no qualitative change in
the lifters from a Chevy engine but makes no mention of the fact that Slick-50
was torture tested in three cars (all high-mileage) by the Automotive Services
Councils for Pa.; the cars' engines were treated with Slick-50, and the oil
was drained 6 months later, immediately after which the same cars (now with
NO oil in the crankcase) were driven for about a half hour with no
apparent damage.
Anyone who knows the least bit about automotive engines knows the rod and main
bearings are far more vulnerable to abuse and lack of lubrication than the
valve lifters; the qualitative change (or lack of it) is less significant than
the proven increase in durability given the bottom end.

Having used Slick-50 I can attest to my experience with that product.
I cannot comment on the other Teflon-based additives or their worth.

No, I am not a Slick-50 dealer (yet).

I personally have used 'TUFOIL' another teflon additive for the
crankcase. While I did not see much of a change in the gas
mileage, I definitely noticed a cooler running temperature.
I also noticed that the crankcase oil stayed golden for a
time much longer than it would have without the additive.
Having heard about Slick-50, I am inclined to try it in
the next car I buy !

I used it in my (now sold) 1980 Toyota Corolla, 4sp.
