From: military@att.att.com (Bill Thacker) Sunday, 19 January, 1941 The British forces in Sudan capture Kassala, marking the beginning of a new campaign for the Italian colonies of Eritrea and Ethiopia. This is made possible by the arrival of the 4th Indian division, stripped from the British forces in Libya. Also participating is the 5th Indian division. Fighting breaks out between Nationalist and Communist Chinese troops in the Yangtse Valley, resulting in the disbanding of the Communist New 4th Army. Hitler summons Premier Mussolini to Berchtesgaden for consultation. Continued German air raids on Malta cause additional light damage to the carrier Illustrious. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Bill Thacker military@att.att.com Send submissions for "50 Years Ago" to military-request@att.att.com "Never before has the United States given to one man the power to strip this nation of its defenses.
