[net.followup] what time is it?

Maybe you should ask the guy who was seeking "information" last year...he
had no requirements as to topic or amount of information: all he wanted was
high-quality stuff. I recall that he, too, promised to summarize to the net,
but I don't think he ever did. Perhaps someone gave him the time as a piece
of information? It would be worth checking at least. Go on: spend a few
grand on a posting to net.misc, .general, .announce, .nlang, ...

And don't forget to summarize! My god, such an important topic surely
deserves the attention of the civilized world!

That's ridiculous! If we all send the time to Brian and he summarizes
for the net there will be an unavoidable delay while he waits for all
the responses to accumulate. As a result the times will be hopelessly
out of synchronization!

Instead, everybody should call him with the time! But in order to avoid
synchronization delays everyone should call at the same time ...
How about if we all call at 14:00 (EST) on Friday, Feb. 22nd?
But wait! We still need to synchronize our watches... Okay, get ready...
On my signal set your watches (I'm dialing the time number just to be
extra accurate) to 17:00 (Monday, 2/18) ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ...
... ... ... ... ... ... ... MARK!

Oh yes, Brian's number is (201) 829-2884

If that is really his number we should call. Brian, do you mind a
collect call -- since I will be doing you a service, and you did
ask? Oh, BTW its 23:03:37 2/19/1985 right now! ( <= time "!" was typed)

( I hate contributing to the delequency of the net, but it is fun.
Though shouting to friends in a theater might be so considered, and
I think it (such shouting) is stupid. Why does so much of what I
see remind me of people shouting back and forth across a crowded room? )
(Note above misspelling of "delinquency". It is important to keep the
wolves happy; one spelling mistake should do it.)

I have yet to see any profound replies to the original query. Everyone
seems to be skimming the surface.
What time is it indeed.
Of course the author knows the clock time. It is the TIME for which he
seeketh.
It is time to stop wasting the net's time with sill-assed experiments
on net.general.
It is time that intelligent adult net commissars renamed net.general
to something that doesn't suggest net.everything.goes.
(even net.general.interest would be an improvement)
It is time we stopped making an understanding of the spirituality of
net.general part of the usenet "rites of passage."
It is time that we realized that there is no such thing as an article
of interest to literally everyone on the net from Alice to Timbuctu.
We should settle for P=0.5 of interest to 0.5 of the population, which
means it is OK if it is not of interest to ME. (Oh, God, it hurts, it
hurts, but I guess it's necessary)

If you write to the net asking what time it is, you'd be better
off writing a letter to the David Letterman show -- They can
tell you what time it is MUCH faster.

Friday, Feb. 22, of what year? This takes us back to the question of leap
years-- heh heh heh.

Isn't technology great! Today if you want to know the time you simply
dial the time service (Speaking Clock to folks in the UK). In the days
before the phone, you had to write.

Not only that, but in those days, when a reply arrived, the "date" portion
of the time would still be correct! And you had a better-than-90% chance
of delivery, too!
