[sci.military] buldge on tank gun barrels

What is the cylindrical buldge on the barrel of the m1 tanks, about
2/3 down the barrel from the muzzle?

[mod.note: It's a bore evacuator. Its purpose is to remove propellant
fumes from the gun bore so that when the breech is opened, they don't
all flood back into the turret. - Bill ]

Also, how thick is the front armor on an m1? Someone told me 2 meters, that
seems a little high.
