The M1A1 with DU armour has 600mm of equivalent hard steel. The word
'equivalent' is used since the armour is a combination of steel, depleted
uranium and ceramics. This figure is for frontal armour only, all other
sides would be less.
The 100mm gun of the T-55 with BM-6 APDS can penetrate 265mm of steel at
1000 yds (tanks seldom engage at 100 yds.!).
I've heard press reports that the Iraqis have regunned their T-55s with
125mm (I find this hard to believe but you never know). The 125mm with
APFSDS can penetrate 450mm of steel at 1000 yds.
