[sci.military] What good is a nonpenetrating hit on a tank?

With all the discussion of tank armor, I've been wondering what it's like
to be in a tank whose armor successfully deflects a significant hit (i.e.,
no penetration, no spalling, etc.). Is the crew alive but temporarily
ineffective with a tremendous headache or something? Or do they just
turn right around and shoot back, or what?
