[sci.military] Question on the Copperhead

One of the "smart" weapons the US Army wants to use in Desert Storm
is the Copperhead artillery round. My understanding is that when
the round is fired, somebody uses a laser target designator to
guide the shell. I also read/heard somewhere recently that when
the US Army did a couple of test firings (the shells are apparently
very expensive) in the Saudi desert, the shells missed so badly that
the observers did not even know where the shells landed.

Any comments/clarifications on the above would be appreciated.

Marty
