ATACMS wasn't designed to be the follow-on to the LANCE. LANCE is primarily
a nuclear weapon. ATACMS isn't, in its original form. With all of the
budget cuts, treaties being negotiated, etc. the planned follow-on to Lance
will probably turn into an ATACMS variant, rather than a separate program.
Cheaper that way. There's a lot of things you can do with a modular missile
pod for an MRL. The Brazilian ASTROS-II system is an excellent example: it
fires 122mm, 180mm and 300mm rockets. Lots of flexibility. I wouldn't be
surprised if we field several other rocket/missile systems on the MLRS in the
next five to ten years. We do need a light variant of it, though, on a truck
or something to go with XVIII corps.
