From: Graper Brad P (MTSD/FIO) <graper@BRL.MIL> ATACMS wasn't designed to be the follow-on to the LANCE. LANCE is primarily a nuclear weapon. ATACMS isn't, in its original form. With all of the budget cuts, treaties being negotiated, etc. the planned follow-on to Lance will probably turn into an ATACMS variant, rather than a separate program. Cheaper that way. There's a lot of things you can do with a modular missile pod for an MRL. The Brazilian ASTROS-II system is an excellent example: it fires 122mm, 180mm and 300mm rockets. Lots of flexibility. I wouldn't be surprised if we field several other rocket/missile systems on the MLRS in the next five to ten years. We do need a light variant of it, though, on a truck or something to go with XVIII corps. brad graper
