Prentice john@unmfys.unm.edu (Internet) suggested that some rounds that failed to penatrate might kill the tank crew (and hence knock out the tank) by causing stuff to spall off the inside of the armor. Ny comment: I would expect tank designers to be working on anti-spall armor. Maybe by lining the inside with Kevlar or something you could cut down on the armor's tendency to spall.
