From: AUGUST@JPLLSI.JPL.NASA.GOV (Richard B. August) The FAVs of the 9th ID (Mech) were developed during the "early" '80s. Intended for use with "Light Infantry" the FAV has a really good punch with either a TOW launcher or 20mm cannon (mounted in-line). I've also seen versions with just 50cal machine gun mounts. These things are fairly stable and can be righted (after fliping over) by the crew. During the BOARDERSTAR'85 exercise at Ft. Bliss, Texas (a misnomer), the FAVs scored, roughly, a 10-to-1 ratio of tank kills to FAV kills. The 9th ID (Mech) has been referred to as the "TOY-R-US" Division by some naysayers in the Army. However, they developed a lot of good equipment for use in Low Intensity Conflict (LIC) which should come in handy in Central and South America and other places around the world. Regards, Richard B.
