According to Jane's All The World's Aircraft 1990-91, the USAF has a
program to modify some FB-111As for dual-role service with units of
the Tactical Air Command under the designation F-111G. Under this program,
the FB-111A's short range attack missile (SRAM) system for stand-off
nuclear delivery is retained, and a conventional weapons release system
is installed to provide dual-role capability. Other improvements include
Have Quick UHF radio and a new ECM system. It is thought that the F-111G
will be deployed initially with SRAM and later with AGM-131A SRAM II
missiles. The first two F-111G conversions were completed in early
1989. The program is due to continue until 1994, at the rate of approximately
12 aircraft per year. F-111Gs and FB-111As will be transferred from
SAC to TAC between June and December 1990. Deployment in Europe was
considered, but the aircraft will now be added to the 27th TFW at Cannon
AFB, NM, (augmenting F-111Ds) following the 1990-91 disbandments of
SAC's 509th BW at Pease AFB, NH, and 380th BW at Plattsburgh AFB, NY.
The USAF has 62 FB-111s/F-111Gs.

A request for proposals was expected early in 1990 for an EF-111A upgrade
known as the System Improvement Program (SIP) and including a new signal
processor and replacement of the exciters which generate modulation
for jamming.

As of a week or so ago, SIP had yet to be awarded, but the decision was
expected by the end of this month.
