From: Graper Brad P (MTSD/FIO) <graper@BRL.MIL> For those who read the article describing US unit organizations: A US tank battalion has four tank companies and a headquarters company. The old three tank company, one combat support co., one HQ co. organization was on its way out in 1984. All of the stuff which used to be in the combat support company is now in the HHC, with some exceptions. The Armored Vehicle Launched Bridge section went to the division engineer battalion. The Stingers went to the air defense battalion. All the cooks now belong to HHC. The mechanics all went to the battalion maintenance platoon, but were attached to the tank company they supported; this particular change was done differently in different divisions. Each tank company has three platoons of four tanks each, and two HQ tanks. The battalion HQ also also has two tanks. This makes for a total of 58 tanks. The battalion also has a scout platoon and mortar platoon. The 1st cavalry Division is made up of brigades, not cavalry regiments. It's basically an armored division. There's generally one armored cavalry regiment per corps, and one divisional cavalry squadron per division; the divisional cavalry squadrons are not organized the same as regimental cavalry squadrons. The USMC has no Sheridans. Brad Graper previously CPT, Armor
