From: ren@virga.rap.ucar.edu (Ren Tescher) Three of my brothers worked on oil drilling rigs (2 roughnecks, 1 worm) in the past decade. While touring one, I was told of a device called a 'Blow-Out Protector' located about twenty feet below the surface. As I remember it encircled the pipe stem and was activated during a blow-out. I'm not sure if activation was manual or auto, but it crimped the pipe or added turbulators to greatly reduce the flow. Maybe they are left in place or removed after the well is capped. Such devices could help in Kuwait. ren
