From: drn@pinet.aip.org (donald_newcomb) This is being posted to both the Usenet military science (sci.military) and the Bitnet government document (GOVDOC-L) lists. If something I say doesn't make sense, it is probably intended for the other group. I would like to thank all the people who answered my queries about finding a reliable source for U.S. Army Field and Technical Manuals (FM & TM series). I took these suggestions to the acquisitions librarian at my friendly neighborhood research library. She went over them with me and, after figuring out what I wanted, produced a tome from the Defense Technical Information Center (DTIC) entitled, "How To Get It" (AD-A201 600). This book, which is about the size of the Atlanta White Pages, was written to assist the DOD in finding it's own documents, but has some information of use to private individuals. Listed under "Army-Manuals-Technical (TM)" it said that civilians should look under "NTIS Army Publications Program." Which I did. The National Technical Information Service (NTIS) has established THE office for civilian purchase of Army publications. There is no NTIS price list for this, though. They query the Army via computer hookup to determine availability and price and reply with a quote on a case- by-case basis. Delivery is 4 to 6 weeks. Cost is $8.00 to $40.00 per copy (No one I know ever accused NTIS of being cheap!). They prefer to receive your "Wish List" via their direct FAX, rather than either phone or TELEX. They can reply within 1 business day by return FAX. You must enquire and order by number. Publications may be available in fiche, paper or both. They also have access to some Air Force Pubs. NTIS Attn: Army Publications Program 5285 Port Royal Rd Springfield, VA 22151 Phone:(703) 487-4684 Direct to Army Pubs. FAX :(703) 487-4841 " " " " TELEX:89-9405 Mark:"ATTN: ARMY PUBS" Probably one of the first Army Pubs. that a researcher should get is DA-PAM-310-1; The microfiche Consolidated Index of Army Publications and Forms. Now, $8.00 to $40.00 per copy is not cheap. You may want to check other sources first. Here are some that have been suggested: 1. Regional Federal Depository Libraries should have, or be able to get, most titles. If you don't know where your Regional Depository is, ask your local library. 2. Purchase from Army-Navy suppliers. Some suggested supliers are: a. Camp Shelby Army Surplus P.O. Box 15073 Hattiesburg, MS 39402 (601) 582-4226 Recently won scrap paper contract for MS National Guard. Looking for market for manuals by-the-ton. b. U.S. Cavalry 2855 Centennial Ave. Radcliff, KY 40160 (800) 777-7732 (502) 351-1164 FAX: (502) 352-0266 Well known mail order place, near Ft. Knox. c. I'm going to write just to find out how they work it 8-). e. Cadre Supply P.O. Box 22074 Memphis, Tenn. 38122 (901) 526-4986 Another, but less well known, mail order house. The mentioning of certain business concerns does not indicate any endorsement of same. I may have missed some good sources. Any southern bias in the above list is either a coincidence or comes from the fact that I am in Mississippi. Thanks again for all the help. Donald Newcomb drn@pinet.aip.org drn@aip.bitnet
