It may well be that Ford knew that many of their cars had transmission problems that could be easily fixed. Unfortunately, once they do learn this, our legal system has them in a no-win situation. If they don't fix it, they may be held liable for knowingly selling a faulty product. On the other hand, if the DO fix it, they are thereby admitting that they are at fault, so if some owner they fail to contact gets into an accident as a result of the problem, it's almost an automatic guilty verdict.
