(boy, but this one hurts)
i've had a great opportunity come up to move overseas in early july;
unfortunately, it forces me to sell my '80 scirocco which was heavily upgraded
just last october (sob).
if you are in the market for exceptional performance at a really low price,
this should be very interesting to you.
the basics: '80 scirocco, S model. white w/red interior, recaro-type
buckets, 5-speed, rear wiper, glass tilt-up sunroof.
1.6 litre 4-cyl. ~59 000 miles, mostly highway.
the car is not air conditioned.
last summer, for my own perverse reasons, i decided that i wanted a tighter-
handling car with good power on demand. looked at a few new things, thought
that $18 000 for a saab 900apc turbo, or $25 000+ for a 944 was a bit much
for my wallet. so, what can be done with what we've already got?
what next: at 50 000 miles, the engine was pronounced fully suitable for
a turbo upgrade -- "in absolutely excellent condition, should
make it to 150 000 with normal care" (Andy King)
who's he?: Andy King is proprietor of R&A Applied Arts, Lyndhurst, NJ.
in vw circles, he is considered to be one of, if not absolutely
THE best when it comes to golf and scirocco tuning & upgrades.
(how convenient for me that he just happened to be in NJ).
refer to vw/porsche, classic vw, c/d, and other magazines over
the last few years...
i didn't feel like selling this car and buying a por$che, so here's what we did
(a lot cheaper than a 944):
engine, etc: full calloway stage 2 turbo with intercooler and microfueler
(up-controlled system which calculates amount of fuel
necessary above and beyond what the stock bosch system can
deliver, then supplies this excess thru a 5th injector).
oil cooler. bosch tsz electronic ignition. baffled oil pan.
seats and valves re-lapped, valve stem seals replaced, stiffer
springs installed. cut ring head gasket. flow-thru exhaust.
new aux. air regulator. new (non-sticking!) throttle bellcrank.
trans., etc: sachs 190mm street/competition clutch. lightened and balanced
flywheel. hurst 5-speed shifter w/reverse lockout. pulsar
shift linkage.
suspension: full koni shocks. front/rear stressbars/swaybars. gti rear
springs, r&a front springs. new strut caps. 205/60 vr13
phoenix stahlflx 3011's on silver bbs 13x6.
new front bearings, everything repacked.
braking: gti vented rotors. repco pads. braided steel lines. hi-temp
fluid.
misc: cibie lighting (lo & hi). kamei air dam. hidden fuel pump
kill switch. mcgard wheel locks. manifold vacuum/boost
pressure gauge.
so how does it perform?
for you 0-60 freaks, i've done 6.5 sec. Andy says that a 6.0
is definately feasible.
top speed (at 6000rpm redline in 5th) is theoretically ~134mph.
the car has been (reliably) radar-clocked to 129.
roadholding is phenominal; i've driven very few cars which
corner as well, and just generally handle as tight, as this.
{if you're local: the bamm hollow dogleg is interesting at 60
(ok, so i use both lanes); and the "hundred club" at holmdel is
a cinch.}
horsepower rating is ~180; boost pressure limits at 13 lbs.
not to be obnoxious, just making an observation: this car eats
just about everything on the road (please, no flames from you
gearheads who've dropped a 428 into a golf, or whatever:
i'm just trying to appeal to the other lunatic "enthusiasts"
out there who would appreciate a bargain). only real
problem so far was a 930 turbo...i think i'll live with it,
though. this scirocco is just about unsurpassed in the "bang
for the bucks" catagory.
{it's sort of nasty/funny watching the face of some poor dude
as he realizes that his $40 000 928s is being blown off by...
a measley scirocco?!?!?!}
how much?: $10 500 or best offer. blue book + added value is several
thousand more; i'm willing to take the loss because
i've got short notice to move...
all work described above was performed in october, 83; the car
sat stored (not driven, but turned over) for 1.5 months in
early 84 while I was travelling on business. so it's really
only been driven ~7 months since the conversion.
call for a demo (and bring your escort...)
serious inquiries only, please.
