The very latest in subs, for those who can't afford the
cost and trouble with nuclear power, is to have a
Stirling engine (almost no vibrations) fuelled by
diesel oil and supplied with liquid oxygen. This makes
you independent of snorkeling for 'weeks'.

On the Swedish sub now undergoing sea trials, the
ordinary bank of batteries is retained, and power
both from them and the Stirling is fed to the engines
for 'dash speed', limiting this to some 5 or 10 hours.
