The smaller the target, relative to the wavelength of the radar signal, the weaker the signal return. Using a 600KHz signal (500 meters) you might get a weak return from an aircraft carrier. You'd have little information on bearing, though. The lowest frequency radar I know in use is the Soviet OTH radar operating around 14-30 MHz (20-10 meters). Modern AAA and missile radars operate in the centimeter and millimeter wavelength ranges. Better returns, more antenna gain in smaller packages, better resolution, etc. --mike edelman medel;ma@cms.cc.wayne.edu
