There is one instance where you have no choice but to leave the car running. Suppose you are in an unloading zone which says no parking. This means stopping and standing for the purposes of unloading is allowed. A typical example is at an airport. You stop the car and get the luggage out of the trunk. If you turn off the engine, you are parking, and can get hit with a ticket. (I know someone to whom this happened.) Consequently, you must leave the engine running while standing behind the car.

Never depend on the Park autotrans setting for parking Alawys use the hand(parking) brake. By the way, when parking at the curb in NYC, its a good idea to leave the car (manual or autotrans) in neutral, in case the person in front or behind decides they need more room to get out. This may save some transmission repairs!
