In the latest issue of the Swedish Air Force magazine
'Flygvapen-nytt' is an article on FSR-890, our future
airborne radar stations.

The trials aircraft is a Fairchild Metro III, and it
is either that or Saab 340 which will carry the operational
system, depending on how much 'extra' equipment and
personell will be carried.

The SLAR is a 8 m long box on top of the fuselage. It is
pointed out that it is mounted in such a way that no twisting
loads can be transmitted. The antenna can scan in two 120
degrees sectors. Rotating antennas were ruled out very early,
due to the size and cost of the aircraft required to carry
them.

Advantages of electronically scanned antennas are pointed
out: You don't have to waste time/power scanning in 'uninteresting'
directions, you can have very high scan rates in some sectors.
The fact that you can't scan 360 degrees isn't seen as much of
a disadvantage as the aircraft will operate well back of our
own lines.

There will be no fighter controllers aboard. Radar information
will be downlinked and integrated in the network just like from
any radar station.

No decision to purchase has been made, but the Air Force has said
that about four are wished for. They are seen as a supplement to
ground radars where low altitude coverage is bad or where they
have been knocked out.
