Several of these German ships were used (and sunk) during the US
aerial bombing tests of the early 1920s, led by Brig-Gen Billy Mitchell.
Among these ships were the following:

CL SMS (Sein Majesties Shiffe [sp?], "His Majesty's Ship") Frankfurt
DD G-102
BB SMS Ostfriesland
SS U-117

US ships were also used:
BB-1 USS Indiana
BB-4 USS Iowa
BB-8 USS Alabama
BB-16 USS New Jersey
BB-13 USS Virginia
BB-47 USS Washington

Although the results of the tests proved that battleships could be sunk
by aerial bombardment, it was still thought that modern battleships could
survive. Further it was believed that future battleships could be built to
be ever more surviveable against this type of attack.
