Subject: Hertz GT-350's Newsgroups: net.auto Just a quick followup on the Hertz GT-350 Shelby Mustangs that could be rented from Hertz Rent-A-Car under the "Hertz Rent-A-Racer" program. There were a limited number (I can't remember how many) of Shelby GT-350's built specifically for Hertz. They were black with gold stripes, and carried a GT 350H designation (H for Hertz). These cars could be rented from Hertz by anyone, so long as they could pass a simple competency test, had insurance, and a valid driver's license. Many of these cars were indeed rented strictly to race on weekends at SCCA and other road race/Trans Am events. Many of the cars were wrecked by inexperienced drivers, however, the few that survived are cherished collector's items. At that time, roll bars were (and still are, thank God) required for SCCA racing, so if you lift the carpet on a GT-350H, you'll likely find some holes in the floor where the weekend racers installed bolt-in rollcages. At the end of the weekend, out comes the rollbar, give the car a quick cleanup, and take it back to Hertz. It's too bad that today you can't go out and get a "Hertz Rent-A-Musclecar" - It would certainly teach a few people the meaning of the term MUSCLECAR! (As well as probably ending up with a lot of accidents caused by people who do not even have an idea of how to handle more than 300 horsepower!)
