From: video@ccwf.cc.utexas.edu (Henry J. Cobb) In Hart's "History of the Second World War", he notes that Montgomery's first battle at Alam Halfa was an indirect use of force. The failure of the New Zealanders' counterattack let Rommel slip out of the bag, leaving Churchill's (The main villian of the book :-) bloodlust unsated. Montgomery therefore tended to use more direct methods for the rest of the war. The Book's a jolly good read, if you don't mind the sound of axe-grinding. -- Henry J.
