Flying wings are not necessarily unstable if properly designed.
Horten designed several that were quite nice to fly with 
excellent stability (within the design CG range). I believe the
only reason that the Honeywell stability aug. system was installed
was to improve stability for bombing.  As usual with an 
aircraft that displays fairly nimble handling, when you want
truck-like stability for high altitude bombing, you aren't
going to get it.
