From: urbanf@yj.data.nokia.fi (Urban Fredriksson) AJS 37 Viggen, conversion of three versions into one (This information is from issue 2/91 of FlygvapenNytt, the magazine of the Swedish Air Force.) The new anti-ship missile Rb 15F has already been purchased. To enable the Viggen to carry it, the computer has to be upgraded and fitted with a multi-processor unit and a databus introduced. Together with this modification, it is a small matter to give the aircraft a TRUE multi-role capability (which was envisioned in 1972, when it entered service). Future pilots are also supposed to be multi-role. The computer upgrade also allows transfer of large amounts of data between the mission planning and evaluation system (FASA). ADVANTAGES - More aircraft available for large scale attack missions. - Better air defence coverage of Sweden. - Faster evaluation of reconnaissance missions. - You can get high quality reconnaissance data from any mission. - To eliminate one component, ALL aircraft in the AJS system must be destroyed by an attacker. - Since FASA is used to evaluate all missions in detail, including air combat between several aircraft (something which in other air forces has to be done on instrumented ranges with external data pods), it is very suitable to evaluate new threats in wartime. (And I wish to point out again that you use the SAME computer to plan your next mission.) - Economic usage of airframes. When attack squadrons are supplied with JAS 39 Gripen, their Viggens can be used in recce squadrons. - Easier introduction of Gripen in squadrons, since the new operational philosophy is what you need to make full use of that aircraft's capability. WHEN? It has already begun.
