From: robinro@ism.isc.com (Robin Roberts) We've seen several articles responding to a query about the newest Soviet aircraft carriers - unfortunately there is a lot of confusion about its name: Among the names for it have been Tblisi, Breshnev, and ever Gorshkov. It was original believed to be named "Leonid Breshnev" although that was never publicly announced by the USSR, it was later revealed that its name would be "Tblisi" which is a city in Soviet Georgia. As the unrest in that and other Soviet Republics increased, evidently the USSR's navy decided it would be embarrassing to have a capital ship of their fleet named after rebelious republics and the lead ship's name was changed to: {drum roll please} Admiral of the Fleet Kuznetsov I have no information as to the current name of the second ship of this class which is not yet operational. -- Robin D.
