From: carmi@ipla01.hac.com (Aviram Carmi) LTV TO SELL COMMERCIAL HUMVEE It's been called a "jeep on steroids," and soon, you might be able to roam city streets in one. The Army's high utility, multipurpose wheeled vehicle, or humvee, is going to be available to the public, with a few modifications to make it street legal, for as little as $40,500. The chunky, jeep-like vehicle, also known as the hummer, distinguished itself in combat during the Persian Gulf War and the 1989 invasion of Panama. It has an eight-cylinder diesel engine, four-wheel drive, independent suspension, power steering and 16 inches of clearance. The humvee climbs a 60-degree grade, is hard to flip and runs in ice, mud, snow, and, and course, sand. The commercial version, however, won't include machine guns, TOW or Stinger missiles.
