NORTHROP AWARDED "BAT" CONTRACT
The US. Armannounced today it has awarded a $344 million contract to
the Northrop Corporation, Electronic Systems Division, Hawthorne, Calif., for
its latest brilliant, anti-armor weapons system -- "BAT".
The contract funds a 42-monh development effort for "BAT" and begins
the Engineering and Manufacturing Development (EMD) phase of the program. The
Raytheon Corporation of Manchester, N.H. is the principal subcontractor for the
weapon system.
"BAT" a self-guided submunition which is used to find, attack and
destroy moving armored vehicles. It could be carried deep into enemy territory
by the Tri-Service standoff Attack missile or the Army Tactical Missile System,
then dispersed over a target to selectively attack and destroy it.
The EMD phase was preceded by six years of intense work testing by the
Army and the Northrop Corporation in a classified program.
The "BAT"roject is based at Redstone Arsenal, Ala.

SOVIET SHIP VISIT
Three Soviet ships with nearly 1,000 sailors will visit Jacksonville in
July as part of the Navy-to-Navy contact program between the United States and
the Soviet Union.
The guided missile cruiser Marshal Ustinov, the guided missile destroyer
Simferopol (Sem-fer-o'-pol), and the replenishment ship Dnestr (Da-Nes'-ter)
are scheduled to arrive at Naval Station, Mayport, on July 161991, for a four
day visit .
Admiral Feliks Nilolayevich (Nile-o-lie'-ay-vich) Gromov, commander-in-
chief of the Soviet Northern Fleet, will be the senior officer aboard the
visiting ships. The U.S. Navy host for the vsit will be Vice Adm. Michael P.
Kalleres (Kaal-air'-ays), Commander U.S. Second Fleet, and former commander of
Cruiser Destroyer Group Twelve at Naval Station, Mayport.
This will be the third visit of Soviet ships to the Unid States under
the U.S.-USSR military-to-military contact program. Soviet ships have previ-
ously visited San Diego, Calif., and Norfolk, Va.
As a part of the contact program, U.S. ships have visited Vladivostok an
Sevastopol in the Soviet Union.
